STU Mooters Place in the Top 8 at Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition

STU Mooters Jazmyne Lebel and Sydney Gallibois finished among the top 8 teams at the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Geneva.
After a strong preliminary round where they faced students from BRAC University, Kabarak University, Strathmore University, and Universidad National de Columbia, the pair advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to University of Santo Tomas.
“I am so proud of the dedication Jazmyne and I have had preparing for this competition over the past several months,” said Gallibois, who is pursuing honours in Human Rights and majors in Political Science, History, and Law, Politics, and Society.
“The outcome of the competition demonstrated how, even against some of the world’s most prestigious law schools, our team of two undergraduates from Atlantic Canada can succeed.”
The in-person competition, held at the United Nations Palais des Nations, had students from universities around the world competing over several days before human rights experts and judges of international tribunals.
STU was the only Canadian team to qualify for the advanced in-person rounds.
“One of the reasons I joined moot court was because of the success that STU had at this competition. STU is smaller in size compared to the universities we compete against, making it even more inspiring to have success on an international stage,” said Gallibois.
For Gallibois, from Fredericton, NB, and Lebel, from Quispamsis, NB, both of whom are entering their final year at STU and plan to attend law school after graduation, their experience in Geneva was significant.
“My experience at the competition was very enriching. I learned so much every day,” said Lebel, who is completing a double major in Human Rights and Law, Politics, and Society.
“I’m truly thankful to the STU Moot Court Program for the support and opportunity to compete in Geneva. This competition has helped me grow both as an advocate and an academic and has left me feeling inspired. The lessons and skills I have learned through this experience will stay with me.”
