Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Studies
St. Thomas University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in the Department of Native Studies. The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Indigenous Studies. This tenure-track appointment will begin on July 1, 2021, subject to budgetary approval.
St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of 1,900. Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Indigenous studies or a related field and a strong research and teaching record commensurate with their career stage.
The Department of Native Studies has three intersecting areas of focus: (1) Indigenous socio-political and economic structures and the impact of western ideologies/capitalism on traditional social organization and values; (2) the historical-materialist study of the pre-contact and post-contact past of First Nations, with an emphasis on the historiographical contributions of archaeology, cartography, oral history, and ethnohistory; and (3) Indigenous legal studies, with an emphasis on Native systems of law, the legal-political relationship between Native peoples and Europeans, Aboriginal rights and the legal struggles of Indigenous groups. The University’s priority is for a scholar who specializes in the area of Indigenous legal studies in North America, preferably from a historical-materialist perspective. The ability to teach courses such as “Native People and the Law”, “‘Human’ and ‘Aboriginal’ Rights”, “Aboriginal Peoples and International Law”, and “Aboriginal Rights: The Land Question” would be an asset.
Completed applications must include a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a research portfolio including a (maximum 1000-word) research plan for the initial 5-year term of the CRC appointment, and a teaching dossier. Please ensure that such leaves are highlighted in your application package. Please see the following link for details on the .
